A Scrum Master is the Scrum team member tasked with fostering an effective and productive working environment and guiding others to understand Scrum values, principles and practices. Scrum Masters tend to be people-oriented, have a high level of emotional intelligence, and find joy in helping team members to grow.
Whether you want to serve as a Scrum Master, are adopting Scrum, or just need the tools to be more agile, our Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) course is the right place to start. You’ll gain a solid understanding of Scrum and learn practical ways to apply it on your team and throughout your organization.

Yes, CSM requires you to pass an online exam to complete your certification.
After completing your CSM course, you will receive an email from Scrum Alliance that includes a link to create your login credentials. You will use those credentials to gain access to the Online CSM Test.
To pass the test, correctly answer 37 out of the 50 questions within the 60-minute time limit
You will have two attempts within 90 calendar days after you receive your initial welcome email to pass the test at no cost. After two attempts and/or 90 calendar days, you will be prompted to pay $25 USD for each additional attempt.
Please note that if you've already passed the CSM test, you will not be able to take it again to receive a better score. Your test score is only accessible to you; your instructor or other certificants are not able to see how you performed on the CSM test.
Those who aspire to earn a Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) certification are required to take an either an in-person, two-day 16 hour CSM course or a live-online 14 hour CSM course with one of our certified trainers and/or coaches. Upon successfully completing the training, you will receive a certification account on our website where you will be able to access the online test.
Although we acknowledge that individuals may have prior experience with the Scrum framework or received training from a different Scrum-certifying body, the CSM test is not intended to be a substitute for formal training from Scrum Alliance®. Those who earn a Certified ScrumMaster designation demonstrate a clear understanding of the CSM Learning Objectives addressed in the in-person course.
Please note that all approved courses that lead to CSM certification are found on ScrumAlliance Course Search page; they must be taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer®, Certified Team Coach®, and/or Certified Enterprise Coach®. If you found a CSM class through a third-party, please ensure it is listed on our Course Search page or contact support@scrumalliance.org to ensure its validity toward Scrum Alliance's CSM certification.
